Mac Collins

Table, Set of 4 stools and Dominoes "Uncoded", 2023

Price Upon Request

Exhibited at DESIGN MIAMI. 2023 Mac Collin’s Uncoded Games Table, Stools and Dominoes Set are the second iteration of a Open Code, a work originally designed in response to a specific setting—the West Yorkshire, 18th-century family home of plantation and slave owner Edwin Lascelles—in which the set was first exhibited.  Collins’ design confronts the history of the house and the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. Drawing on his British Jamaican heritage, Collins centered dominoes—a game with deep Caribbean roots—in a “corrective act of representation.” Collins explains that Uncoded, the second iteration of the design made exclusively for Side Gallery, “is an intimate look at the subtler side of Caribbean dominoes, its complexity and the depth of its cultural symbolism and significance within Caribbean diasporic communities. Where Open Code refers to the game played freely with systems of subtle coded gestures exchanged between teammates to indicate the dominoes in their possession, Uncoded refers to the counter rule, where such exchanges are banned – here, players must rely on an even more acute level of observation and tactics to read and control the game. Hence, Uncoded seeks to look closer and more intimately at the game of dominoes and its significant role in building and strengthening Caribbean diasporic communities. The dull black dominoes become inconspicuous against the stained finish of the table surface, inviting a deeper level of concentration and consideration.” Materials: oak wood, dye, wax.
