Hun Chung Lee

Designer

Hun Chung Lee (b. 1967) is one of the most prominent Korean ceramic artists of his generation, working at the intersection of sculpture and useful objects. His work draws on time-honored Korean ceramic traditions while incorporating contemporary concerns and whimsical playfulness. Following a long and successful career in South Korea, Lee established a second studio in Los Angeles in 2021. Lee shares the space with the art consultancy ARTED in LA. Hun Chung utilizes a technique known as "Buncheong," a traditional form of Korean stoneware with a distinctive blue-green tone. In this process, pieces are coated with white slip, and decorative designs are added using various techniques. The primary purpose of applying the white slip is to achieve a brighter color when the glaze is applied on top. While the clay does contain iron oxide, manganese oxide, and quartz particles, it's intended that this doesn't significantly affect the final glaze color, maintaining its brightness.
