Micky’s Paris

by Design Miami

Citizen of the world Micky Wolfson shares his favorite Paris haunts

Ahead of next week’s inaugural edition of Design Miami/ Paris, we asked venerable Wolfsonian-FIU Founder, design collector, and world traveler Mitchell "Micky" Wolfson, Jr. to share his favorite restaurants and inspirational destinations with our community to help ensure they thoroughly enjoy their time in town.

Micky knows the French capital like the back of his hand, so his recommendations include some outstanding options beyond the usual suspects.

Scroll on to read his generous and discerning response, in his own words, to our request for places to go and things to see in Paris…

"The familiar and famous glories of Paris—the well-known institutions, restaurants, hotels, and entertainment venues that we all knew and loved—have indeed metamorphosed, and everything new can be found in all new places. The most visited city on earth has become the new fusion capital of the universe, just as it was in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Once again, it is a leader of change across cultural expressions: science, technology, transportation, aesthetics, mores, and manners. There’s enormous fun to be had, but it can be a little bit disconcerting until you give in to the new rhythm."

"When you arrive as a virgin to Paris, purchase immediately L’ Officiel des Spectacles. Your high school French will serve you well while perusing what’s on in Paris for the week."

"Do not miss La Cité de l'Économie at 1 Pl. du Général Catroux in the 17th arrondissement—a triumph of architecture and technology."

"Not to be missed: the Petit Palais, the Maison de Victor Hugo, and, depending on the exhibition, the Mémorial de la Shoah and the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire du Judaïsme, both in the Marais."

MUSÉE DE CLUNY IN PARIS

"For the specialist, remarkable museums completely restructured to be the best of their type: the Musée de La Poste and the Musée de Cluny (with the world’s most famous tapestries of the Unicorn)."

"Lunch should be taken in La Grande Épicerie de Paris, the food halls of the department store Bon Marché—especially recommended for the fish stand."

CHEZ PAUL IN PARIS

"Other favorite restaurants: Chez Paul (in the grand bistrot tradition); L’Auberge Le Quincy (outrageous old culinary regime); Brasserie Lipp (sit only in the area on the right side of the restaurant as I won’t recognize you if you are anywhere else). For fun, dine in the restaurant of La Grande Mosquée de Paris, across the street from the stupendous Natural History Museum."

LES MARCHES IN PARIS

"Near the Trocadéro are two restaurants that I particularly love: Carette (4 Pl. du Trocadéro) and Les Marches (in Rue de la Manutention), which is one of the last truck-stop restaurants in France. No more trucks, but drivers are treated in a special manner."

"And I have to mention Shabour. It must be reserved early, but it’s an extraordinary dining experience. Call 06 95 16 32 87."

"P.S. Day excursion in the Paris suburb Boulogne-Billancourt: See the Musée des Années Trente, the 1934 City Hall designed by Tony Garnier, and the famous Musée Albert-Kahn with its beautiful gardens, also recently restored. (Take métro ligne 9 stop Marcel-Sembat to ligne 10 stop Boulogne-Jean-Jaurès.)"
