The first, fabulous edition of DESIGN MIAMI.LA has just come to a close, and it was, without a doubt, an affair to remember. Our debut West Coast event was chock full of incredible design, inspiring programming, and plenty of celebrating. It was also—we’re thrilled to note—warmly received by both the Los Angeles and international creative communities, as evidenced by strong sales and attendance.
Our sincere gratitude to all our collaborating galleries, designers, partners and beyond—and to our friends, old and new, for making our inaugural LA event such a success.
Scroll on for a photo tour of highlights of the week.

Kicking off the week, DESIGN MIAMI.LA’s welcome cocktail—cohosted by Jesse Lee, Jen Roberts, and Jim Hedges—took place at the stunning Beverly Hills Hotel. Inside the Polo Room, a who’s who of design lovers gathered to celebrate the LA debut and to honor all those who helped bring our first West Coast fair to life!

WILLIAMS DESIGNED ELEMENTS OF THE BEVERLY HILLS HOTEL—INCLUDING ITS ICONIC SIGN—AS WELL AS THE PRIVATE HOLMBY HILLS ESTATE THAT HOSTED THE LA FAIR. HE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST BLACK ARCHITECTS EVER LICENSED TO PRACTICE IN THE US, AND HUDSON NOTED THAT THE FESTIVITIES WERE TAKING PLACE 100 YEARS AGO TO THE DAY OF WHEN HER TRAILBLAZING GRANDFATHER BECAME A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS.

We launched our Members Preview Day by welcoming patrons from LACMA—our esteemed cultural partner—for a curated tour. DESIGN MIAMI.LA Curatorial Director Ashlee Harrison was responsible for this year’s Podium exhibition, titled Masterworks of Collectible Design, 1938–Present—and led guests on an expert, insider tour.

Presented by Architectural Digest, the DESIGN MIAMI.LA Talks Programran parallel with the fair within a special theater commission by USM and Ojas. The program was curated by Ashlee Harrison, and spotlit local and international thought leaders while celebrating the best of design. Highlights included The Man Who Drew Upside Down, a conversation on the legacy of trailblazing architect Paul R. Williams, led by Getty Research Institute Curators Dr. LeRonn P. Brooks and Maristella Casciato; as well as The Smart Set, featuring Hollywood powerhouse Ryan Murphy in conversation with AD’s West Coast Editor Mayer Rus, discussing conjuring cinematic worlds for Murphy’s film and television productions, designing homes with a singular point of view, and his adventures in collecting art and design.
