Having opened its Los Angeles gallery in February 2024, Southern Guild’s exhibition fortifies its tether to the United States, rooting the work of African artists in the local terrain. The gallery presents work by 14 of their leading artists, including immersive life-size forms by Porky Hefer and ceramic and bronze sculptures by Zizipho Poswa.

For Design Miami 2023, Southern Guild presents a collection of richly handcrafted objects in which nature’s presence is unleashed in a profusion of forms that twist, morph and grow before our eyes. With an emphasis on three-dimensionality, these functional and sculptural works encompass moments of play and quiet reflection, escape and wild release.
About Southern Guild
Expertise/ Contemporary collectible South African design
Established in 2008 by Trevyn and Julian McGowan, Southern Guild represents contemporary artists from Africa and its diaspora. With a focus on Africa’s rich tradition of utilitarian and ritualistic art, the gallery’s programme furthers the continent’s contribution to global art movements. Southern Guild’s artists explore the preservation of culture, spirituality, identity, ancestral knowledge, and ecology within our current landscape. Their work has been acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, LACMA, Art Institute of Chicago, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Pérez Art Museum, Mint Museum, Harn Museum, Denver Art Museum, Vitra Museum, Design Museum Gent and National Gallery of Victoria. Based in Cape Town, Southern Guild opened a second location in Melrose Hill, Los Angeles in February 2024, marking its first gallery in the US.
