Lasvit Presents "Herbarium Radiant" by Maria Culenova
Lasvit's Debut at Design Miami Interprets the "Blue Skies" theme
Lasvit, the internationally acclaimed design house renowned for its glass and light creations, is proud to announce its partnership with Design Miami 2024. Lasvit will unveil an exciting presentation, including three striking elements that showcase the innovative potential of glass.
At the heart of the presentation is "Herbarium Radiant", designed and developed by Lasvit’s Head Designer, Maria Culenova, and Head of Lighting, Jan Formánek. This mesmerizing piece introduces a groundbreaking new type of glass that integrates repurposed waste — specifically, rare lanthanide oxides extracted from recycled electromagnets. These unique oxides blend into the glass composition, allowing users to highlight or suppress certain colors in its light, revealing vibrant, ethereal hues. Viewers will be captivated as the color palette shifts and transforms, creating a visually striking, kaleidoscopic experience.
The installation’s organic form also draws on nature in a tangible way—Lasvit’s artisans embed delicate organic materials into the molten glass, preserving their fragile structure as the glass cools. The result is a poetic fusion of nature and craftmanship, offering a lasting tribute to the fleeting beauty of the natural world, forever captured in glass.
Maxim Velcovsky, Lasvit’s Creative Director, will also present a series of vases that pay homage to the enduring influence of post-modernist designer Borek Šípek, whose avant-garde vision laid the foundations for Lasvit’s glasswork. Building on this legacy, Velcovsky reinterprets Šípek’s pioneering spirit through his own distinctive style, which often plays with the meanings and historical contexts of everyday objects, creating ironic and thought-provoking reinterpretations.
Finally, Lasvit will showcase Grain of Sand, an installation by US Head Designer Jana Ružicková that draws inspiration from Miami’s coastal landscape. The mirrored installation captures the transformative journey of sand as it becomes glass—a metaphor for the glassmaking process itself.
