Miami Design District presents 'Pearl Jam' by Nicole Nomsa Moyo
Miami Design District presents Nicole Nomsa Moyo, the winner of the 10th Annual Design Commission, curated by Design Miami Curatorial Lab. “Pearl Jam” honors the vibrant aesthetic of the Southern African Ndebele tribe and will be featured prominently at the entrance of Design Miami and throughout Miami Design District.
The award-winning architect and urban designer Nicole Nomsa Moyo, brings a unique cultural perspective to “Pearl Jam”. Her installation is a contemporary tribute to Ndebele traditions, drawing on intricate patterns and bold colors to create a universal dialogue of creativity and identity. “Pearl Jam” reflects Moyo’s vision to merge personal and historical influences, bridging the past with present innovation. The installation showcases interactive jewelry-themed experiences, including giant pearls, a deconstructable necklace, a sprawling bracelet, and radiant earrings. These elements blend geometric shapes and vibrant colors, engaging visitors while weaving tradition into the neighborhood’s dynamic fabric.
Central to the project is the artistry of indigenous Ndebele women from Southern Africa, who handcrafted over 1,000 earrings using locally sourced materials. These intricately designed pieces, embedded with vivid hues, represent exceptional human skill and artistry. Each earring carries a story of empowerment, symbolizing the shared threads that bind diverse cultures globally.
“Pearl Jam” emphasizes craftsmanship and celebrates fine jewelry-making traditions. The installation stands as a bridge between tradition and modernity, reflecting the unique heritage of African culture while connecting communities through human creativity.

“The Miami Design District is a living, breathing canvas. What excites me is the dialogue between art and the community—how a piece can spark curiosity and conversation. By offering avant-garde opportunities to designers, artists, and architects, we open up new possibilities for how people engage with their environment.” – Craig Robins, Miami Design District visionary and developer.
