The Miami Design District named Lara Bohinc, founder of Bohinc Studio as the winner of the neighborhood’s highly anticipated Annual Design Commission. “Utopia” is a friendly and dynamic sculptural installation of irregular organic life-like forms made of cork. Their kind, yet mysterious shapes also assume function; to sit, play, and gather. The installation will be realized across the Miami Design District’s public spaces as well as a special installation at the entrance of the Design Miami/ Fair. The 900 egg-shaped birdhouses will hang throughout the neighborhood's trees, providing shelter for local wildlife. The sculptures include outdoor seating, tables, and an oversized solar-powered light across the neighborhood. Curated by Design Miami/ Curatorial Lab, Utopia collectively imagines a city where nature thrives peacefully with and in harmony with our human presence.
