Exhibited at DESIGN MIAMI. 2023 Alida paints her gestural symbols in rich sumi ink onto Japanese Kozo paper - made from the inner bark of mulberry trees - before ripping the work and constructing her draped sculptures from the strips. Highly tactile and enigmatic, Alida's work recalls religious scrolls, the soft folds of handwritten letters and worn bindings of ancient books. She is interested in the relationships between cultural and historical heritage and methods of communication and mark making. Her work represents the objecthood of records of communication - the transformation of human thought and connection into artefact. Materials: japanese mulberry paper with bark flecks, watercolour, graphite, bookbinding adhesive, wooden hook.
