Among the most talked about installations at Design Miami/ 2023 was Terminal 01, a high-energy collaboration between global manufacturing giant Kohler and award-winning British artist-designer Samuel Ross along with his London-based studio SR_A.

The project was announced a few months ago, which seeded an atmosphere of eager anticipation in the lead up to the December fair. The unveiling did not disappoint. Saturated in vibrant Haptic Orange, Terminal 01 showcased a radical new faucet design, Formation 01, staged within an interactive, multisensory, boldly architectonic mise-en-scène, complete with digital activations and flowing channels of water.

“Establishing a new relationship to water through engineering and aesthetics is at the top of my mind. Expertise within the remit of engineering flourish within Kohler’s ecosystem... and was essential to transforming a raw concept into a scalable result.”

Kohler has a long and laudable history of collaborating with global art and design luminaries, over the decades inviting an impressive roster of boundary-pushing creatives to inject fresh perspectives into the 150-year-old brand’s enduring legacy of industrial craftsmanship and technology. In Ross, Kohler found an vanguard, deep thinker with an appetite for daring experimentation. The partnership resulted in the new-in-every-way Formation 01 faucet.

Forgoing traditional manufacturing methods, the Formation 01 is cast as a singular, sculptural object in Neolast, a state-of-the-art material exclusive to Kohler, which allows for the dramatic expression of form. Thanks to advanced engineering, the faucet features custom water channels that achieve fluid water delivery through Ross’s angular design. The piece is mounted on a stately cast iron plate, the material for which Kohler is most known, and coated in Haptic Orange (which happens to evoke Kohler’s iconic Tiger Lily line from the 1960s).

“The bold, dramatic design of Terminal 01, like the faucet itself, aims to reinvent the daily engagements with water and invites visitors to control and affect the flow and intensity of water traveling towards the center of the space.”

Terminal 01 and Formation 01 represent a seamless synthesis of the strengths that both Kohler and Ross brought to this much applauded collaboration—experimental and stylish, on the one hand, and expertly engineered and built to last on the other.

“Throughout our history,” David Kohler, Kohler Chair and CEO, reflects on the success of the partnership, “we have operated on the leading-edge of innovation, creativity, and bold leadership—attributes that align with the approach of Samuel and SR_A. The Kohler x SR_A Formation 01 faucet is… an experience unlike anything we have seen in the industry. The breakthrough ideas shared in our collaboration help drive our industry leadership forward and challenge us to expand our perspectives of product and process.”
