Pieter Maes

Triad Chair, 2023

Price Upon Request

Exhibited at DESIGN MIAMI. 2023 The TRIAD collection was designed by Paris-based designer Pieter Maes in collaboration with gallery founder Melanie Courbet and master craftsmen Nikolas Kaparos. The TRIAD chairs are a study in elemental chair design, distilling the chair's constituent elements to their most rudimentary form. Comprising just three legs with an extension serving as the backrest, they represent a deliberate exercise in design restraint. Inspired by Greek Mythology, the Triad Chairs were initially hand sculpted by Maes at the Kaparos Foundry in Athens, Greece. Based on digital renderings, to create a highly textured surface, the artist hand sculpted the plaster over welded rebar skeletons, then sand casted in bronze by Nikolas Kaparos in a limited edition of 25, with 4 artist proofs. Made in two distinct versions, the chairs’ substantial yet hollow manifestation of the material explores the nuanced possibilities of bronze, and the material’s remarkable adaptability, capable of assuming any form. The series is part of Editions Courbet- a program through which the gallery invites international artists and designers to visit and collaborate with the master craftsmen and ateliers it represents. Each collaboration follows a common thread and intention to highlight the inspiring work ethos and craftsmanship mastery behind every piece. Materials: Cast Bronze.
