Jean-Michel Wilmotte

Designer

Architect, city planner and designer, Jean-Michel Wilmotte was born in 1948 in Soissons (France). He founded his own architecture firm in Paris in 1975. Jean-Michel Wilmotte takes an interest in everything in equal measure: from the most improbable to the most obvious, from the top of the range to the most economical, from the smallest thing to the most imposing. What does a door handle (designed for Hafi) have in common with large-scale sports facilities (the Allianz Riviera stadium)? Jean-Michel Wilmotte likes to go where no one expects him. This range of scale and activity allows him an excellent overview; he has the leisure of thinking afresh and “reinventing” each time, always upholding the same demanding level of quality and attention to detail. He formed his team with this in mind: a variety of skills, characters, nationalities, and expertise. Art is everywhere in his life. An enthusiastic collector, he visits a museum here, a contemporary art fair there. The encounters and discoveries these engender are a source of inspiration for Jean-Michel Wilmotte. They are a true driver of his existence. He never ceases to expand and diversify his knowledge, taking lessons from both France and abroad. Today, his business is structured around two companies – architecture firm Wilmotte & Associés and design studio Wilmotte & Industries SAS –, operating more than 100 projects at any one time. Renowned for the diversity of its output and the elegance and excellent finishing quality of its work, the Wilmotte firm operates in both the public and private sectors, across luxury, hospitality, residential, and the service industries. The firm unites 250 employees of 27 different nationalities, and operates in 23 countries. Established in Paris and Nice, its international development brought about the launch of two subsidiary companies: Wilmotte UK Ltd in London, and Wilmotte Italia Srl in Venice. The firm is also represented by an office in Dakar and in Seoul.

The piece produced by Wilmotte’s own company named Academy shows how he carefully picked materials and how architectured his designs are.
